NEW MUSIC: Harmony – Fatal Flaw

Melbourne band Harmony have been hibernating for the past few years but now they’ve re-emerged and they’re sounding quite sublime on this first new single ‘Fatal Flaw’, their first since 2014’s sprawling and dramatic Carpetbombing LP. They’ve also got their first headline show in over two years, launching ‘Fatal Flaw’ at Howler on Friday April 13, with Cable Ties, Bitumen and The Blinds. LIVE REVIEW: Protomartyr @ Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Protomartyr, Mere Women, Angie @ Oxford At Factory, Sydney Australia. February 16th, 2018 The best gigs are the ones where the creative quality and intensity builds evenly, seemingly at a symbiotic pace with the gathering audience. Angie set the scene with a low key and hypnotic opening set. This was another iteration of her solo incarnation, now fleshed out with drummer and acoustic guitarist. Previously … Continue reading LIVE REVIEW: Protomartyr @ Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

ALBUM REVIEW: The Breeders – All Nerve

Some bands hit the pop culture sweet spot just at the right time, igniting and reflecting the spirit of a generation before burning out and fading away. Others hang around, soldiering on with diminishing returns, a loyal fanbase in tow, cushioning their middle-aged bank accounts. There are also those acts who have that moment in the spotlight, vacate the pedestal but then re-emerge years down … Continue reading ALBUM REVIEW: The Breeders – All Nerve

Tropical Fuck Storm (TFS) have released the video clip for their splendid new single ‘You Let My Tyres Down’, complete with red wine, robes, rivers and spaghetti. The B-side is a cover of ‘Back To The Wall’ by The Divinyls, sung by Fiona Kitschin and Erica Dunn. ‘You Let My Tyres Down’ is a mutant swamp-pop blazer, surveying Melbourne’s suburban underbelly with a free flow of … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Tropical Fuck Storm – You Let My Tyres Down

Pissed Jeans, BB & The Blips, L.A Suffocated @ Oxford Art Factory 6th Dec 2017 After the unfortunate dropout of the original support acts, relative unknowns La Suffocated and BB& The Blips stepped in to warm the crowd and set the scene for Pissed Jeans’ first show on Australian soil. NEW MUSIC: No Age – Send Me

No Age made a splash early on with their two-piece garagey post-punk in the early 2000s. For my mind they went off the boil with their last few releases but now they’re back with a new LP called Snares Like a Haircut, due out on January 26, 2018 via Drag City. Here’s the first single ‘Send Me’. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: No Age – Send Me

ALBUM REVIEW: Machine Translations – Oh

J Walker returns with his first album in four years and it finds him in an eclectic yet economical mood. The Bright Door (2007) possessed polish and an ornate sheen while Oh replaces that with rougher edges and a subtle shift toward a lower-fi aesthetic. The opening track Made A Friend sounds like Beck in his melancholic balladeer mode before the first single Parliament Of … Continue reading ALBUM REVIEW: Machine Translations – Oh

ALBUM REVIEW: Protomartyr – Relatives In Descent

Protomartyr immediately stood out from the rest of the anguished post-punk pack when they first emerged four years ago with their debut album All Passion No Technique. They went from strength to strength over their next two albums, twisting Joe Casey’s mantra rants over caustic punk, dark indie guitars and tumbling drums before arriving at their most realised set of recordings to date. Relatives In … Continue reading ALBUM REVIEW: Protomartyr – Relatives In Descent
