NEW MUSIC: The Klubs – Pastors Dance

We featured a track by The Klubs a while back on DS and ‘Pastors Dance’ is another single from their EP Cult Party, Part 2: Bow Down. The South African trio are an amalgam of loose limbed death-disco funk and flailing post-punk, where the rhythm section is the accelerant and the vocal is a wired narrator hanging on for dear life, imploring the masses to ‘dance like each other” before the guitars enter the fray in a Fugazi fuzz storm.

The new EP follows last year’s EP Cult Party, Part 1: Male Plague.

NEW MUSIC: Unwed Sailor – Camino Wheel

Find a riff, nail it down and wear it out. That’s the approach from the best psych-rock and shoegaze bands and the central guitar chords and bass in Unwed Sailor’s track ‘Camino Wheel’ is a perfect example. They know how long to stretch it out for, peppering with adjacent sounds before opening up the music with a sweeping gesture of held electric notes akin to clouds parting on a summer’s day. Elsewhere the bass is given the spotlight to dig dark grooves over this varied and compelling track.

Unwed Sailor are led by Johnathon Ford (ex-Pedro The Lion) and they carve out a fine sound that recalls Swervedriver with elements of the darker, more cosmic end of Krautrock as well as English post-punk. The album Look Alive will be released June 12th by Old Bear Records via Light In the Attic Records.

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have announced their second album Sideways To New Italy will be released on June 5th and to mark the news they’ve released the video clip for their new single ‘She’s There’. It’s jam-packed with their now trademark busy rhythms, heady strums and jangly guitars. Wistfully melancholic, it’s a great precursor to the new full-length album.

NEW MUSIC: Suzie Stapleton – Blood On The Windscreen

Suzie Stapleton - by Antonio Curcetti - BW.j

Australian expat Suzie Stapleton has been based over in the UK for a few years now, continuing to build her career and working with a number of respected musicians. Her latest single ‘Blood On The Windscreen’, is a churning and surging piece of dark majestic rock that features drummer Jim Macaulay (The Stranglers) and Gavin Jay (Jim Jones & The Righteous Mind) on bass. You can hear the likes of PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Mark Lanegan and The Bad Seeds in the song’s quixotic blend of influences.

The song is the second single from her forthcoming debut album We Are The Plague which is slated for release in June via Cargo Records.

“I had a meeting with a photographer in early January to discuss the artwork for We Are The Plague. I joked, ‘I hope a pandemic doesn’t sweep across the world before the album release’. About a week later, coronavirus starting hitting the headlines… and here we are.

“When I wrote the title I was thinking not only of plague as in the disease, but of plague in the proportional sense. We are prone to knee-jerk reactions when another species appears to threaten us in some way, yet it’s our own actions that pose the biggest threat to our survival.

“Why have we reacted so swiftly to coronavirus worldwide, yet we drag our feet to combat climate change which could bring down not only us but our entire global ecosystem?”

NEW MUSIC: Talk Show – Stress

Talk Show - These People EP artwork

Talk Show are another of the current wave of post-punk bands coming out of the UK. From Idles to Fontaines DC, Squid to Black Country, New Road and The Murder Capital. They’re all putting their own stamp and flavour on the sound and Talk Show have a knack for thrilling and hummable melodies as evidenced on this track, ‘Stress’. The song follows their other 2020 single, ‘Banshee’ and shows that their upcoming EP will be one to look out for.

NEWS: Protomartyr Announce New Single/Video And Album

Protomartyr_UST_mockups_MART

Protomartyr, one of our favourite bands of the last decade, have today announced that their new LP Ultimate Success Today will be released by Domino Records on May 29th.

It follows the re-release of their debut album All Passion No Technique last year and their 2017 record Relatives In Descent. They’re one of those bands that keeps developing and evolving and from the sound of the first single ‘Processed By The Boys’, they’re continuing that sonic adventure.

“The re-release of our first album had me thinking about the passage of time and its ultimate conclusion, says singer Joe Casey of Ultimate Success Today. Listening to No Passion All Technique again, I could hear myself hoping for an introduction and a long future, but also being cognisant that it could be one and done for us. So, when it came time to write Ultimate Success Today, I was reminded of that first urgency and how it was an inverse of my current grapple with how terribly ill I’ve been feeling lately. Was that sick feeling colouring how I felt about the state of the world or was it the other way around?”

“This panic was freeing in a way. It allowed me to see our fifth album as a possible valediction of some confusingly loud five-act play. In the same light I see it as an interesting mile marker of our first decade of being a band – a crest of the hill along a long highway. Although just to cover my bases, I made sure to get my last words in while I still had the breath to say them.”

NEW MUSIC: JARV IS… – House Music All Night Long

Jarvis Cocker returns with his first album since Further Complications in 2009.

JARV IS… is a band and the album is called Beyond the Pale, out on Rough Trade Records on May 1, 2020.

JARV IS… features Jarvis Cocker (vocals, guitar, percussion), Serafina Steer (harp, keyboards, vocals), Emma Smith (violin, guitar vocals), Andrew McKinney (bass, vocals), Jason Buckle(synthesiser & electronic treatments) & Adam Betts (drums, percussion, vocals).

JARV IS… formed to play a show at the Sigur Ros “Norður og Niður” festival in Iceland at the very end of 2017.

JARV IS… was conceived as a way of writing songs in collaboration with an audience. As the material they were playing was in a state of flux the band decided to record their live shows so that they could monitor how the songs were developing. After an appearance at the Desert Daze festival in California, Geoff Barrow (Portishead, Beak) suggested that these recordings could be used as the basis for an album.

Overdubs & vocals were added at Narcissus Studios in Neasden, London. Post-production work took place at Jason Buckle’s Place du Big Boss studio in Raynes Park, London. The album was mixed by Craig Silvey at Toast Studios in West London.
