ds recommends: Valar

Sydney duo Valar have been making a name for themselves with their dreamy, hypnotic indietronica. If you are in Sydney you can catch them at the Paddington Uniting Church this Thursday but in the meantime check out a live in studio video of them performing Anoesis and listen/buy last year’s The Belly of the Whale and other releases over at Bandcamp.

ds recommends: Bad//Dreems

Adelaide’s Bad//Dreems are making moves of the dark, twisting, post pop and jangling nostalgic kind. They’ve hooked up with the sympathetic production ears of  Johnny Mackay and Jack Farley (Twerps, Beaches, Love of Diagrams, Bitch Prefect, Scott and Charlene’s Wedding etc) for their debut single Chills which is due out March 1st. They’re also venturing interstate for a few shows, catch em if you can.

Tour Dates

  • 1st March Arcade Lane/Fringe Festival Adelaide with old mate
  • 8th March, Laundry Melbourne with electric smile band
  • 16th March, Goodgod Small Club, Sydney with Betty Airs

ds recommends… Tweak Bird

Want some crunchy metallic psych pop? Tweak Bird do it so well with their 60s vocals reminding me of Red Kross with a great heavy sludge of rock heaving away underneath. Caleb and Ashton Bird are the band (guitar/drums) and they released their 2nd and self-titled album in 2010 (their 1st was Reservations) on Volcom featuring the production work of Dale Crover (Melvins). Check out the vid for Light In Lines

ds recommends… Iowa

Melbourne’s Iowa sound great… heavy, chunky distorted guitars that come in waves like Dinosaur Jr and Crazy Horse soaked in shoegaze. Indecipherable vocals moan and yearn with just the right amount of angst and ache and you get that warm sense of familiarity comforting and invigorating your ears. They have a new red 7″ of Lose Yourself/Reasons out now and you can order it or download it for free over at their bandcamp page.

They’ll also be up in Sydney to play a show at The Lansdowne on April 16th with Sounds Like Sunset & Skull Squadron.

DS recommends: Prismo Perfect

French trio Prismo Perfect sound decidedly un-French with their noisy pop sound that threatens to at first be yet another electronic bore before the guitars crash in all shoegazey under the shouty, exuberant indie vocals. You can download their EP Out of Nowhere for free below while watching the cuddly video for Wired Feelings.
