NEW MUSIC: OVER – Mostly Plants

OVER are two guys (Brett Paulin, Dan Workman) from Toronto, Canada who peg their sound as psychedelic digital shoegaze and it’s a pretty spot on description when you listen to this track ‘Mostly Plants’. It swirls, billows and decays across the sonic spectrum. There are vocals but they’re nestled just below the surface, partially submerged and it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. It matters … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: OVER – Mostly Plants

NEW MUSIC: Earth – Cats On The Briar

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since Earth released their last LP, Primitive And Deadly. The great news this morning is that a brand new album, Full Upon Her Burning Lips is set for release on May 24th. Earth are Dylan Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion, Here’s the first taste of the album with the track … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Earth – Cats On The Briar

NEW MUSIC: Kip LaVie – Function Is Form

Taken from the brand new album This Creator, here’s a really nice track from Kip LaVie, a Portland-based producer. ‘Function Is Form’ has an aqueous feel, burbling and constantly in motion as organic and synthetic sounds intertwine and rise and fall in the mix. The arrangement and production is a standout on this track and stylistically he clearly draws on jazz, avant garde electronic composition … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Kip LaVie – Function Is Form

SONIC KICKS: Darren Cross

Defiantly independent and creatively driven, Darren Cross is always seeking new ways to translate his ideas and influences into music. Whether it was in the heady days of indie/electro guitar punks Gerling, as a DJ and electronic music producer, as one half of folk noir duo Jep and Dep (with Jessica Cassar) or as a solo artist. Under his own name he’s released two solo … Continue reading SONIC KICKS: Darren Cross

NEW MUSIC: These New Puritans – Inside The Rose

UK group These New Puritans return with ‘Inside The Rose’, the second single (and NSFW video) from their forthcoming new LP of the same name, due out March 22nd. It’s their first album in six years and saw the band record in Berlin, London and Southend-on-Sea, before mixing it in Los Angeles. The group have reverted to the original duo of brothers Jack and George … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: These New Puritans – Inside The Rose

NEW MUSIC: Almanacs – Love Peak

Almanacs is the work of Honduran sound artist Wilmer Murillo. ‘Love Peak’ is the title track from his album that came out a few weeks ago and its a beautifully aqueous piece of music that drifts on a warm sonic current of synths, conjuring up all kinds of constantly morphing images that form and dissipate into the aether. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Almanacs – Love Peak

Doubtful Sounds Presents: The Ramalamas, Darren Cross, The Finalists @ The PBC

Hey, we’re putting on a gig! Yep, we go to so many gigs and we know a good lineup when we see one so we’re putting on a Sydney show with three great acts. There’s a personal disclaimer with this in that I play bass in The Finalists. Head to The Petersham Bowling Club on Sunday March 10th and you can catch the cosmic country, … Continue reading Doubtful Sounds Presents: The Ramalamas, Darren Cross, The Finalists @ The PBC

NEW MUSIC: Kayla Painter – Sacrificial Magic

Bristol-based Kayla Painter has released a new EP called Cannibals At Sea. Taking influence from her mixed British and Fijian heritage, Painter creates a hypnotic and mystical piece of experimental music that takes in tonal explorations, drone, ethereal vocal layers and electronic and traditional instrumentation. The result is mesmerising, haunting and alluring. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Kayla Painter – Sacrificial Magic

NEW MUSIC: Hark Madley – Empathy (single edit)

Hark Madley is the immersive exploration of genre-blending soundscapes realized by Los Angeles based producer and composer Mark Hadley. This track comes from his new album Stream, released last week. This single edit of ‘Empathy’ finds him using smeared, low pulsing sounds as the backdrop to some super minimalist piano playing. Those contrasts of beauty and sonic bruising make for a fascinating track that is … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Hark Madley – Empathy (single edit)

NEW MUSIC: Mother Anxiety – Father Time

Here’s a new tune from Ben Serna-Grey (Mother Anxiety), someone I haven’t come across before. ‘Father Time’ has a really interesting mix of drone and otherworldly folk music yet it’s placed in a compositional, electronic realm where the different sonic mediums are mixed and twisted, layered and densely woven together, to the point of static decay and fractal implosion. The result is quite mesmerising. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Mother Anxiety – Father Time

NEW MUSIC: Pardans – Hookers (with Hidden Depths) & Over The Moon And Beyond

Here are two live studio session tracks from the Danish jazz-punk quintet Pardans. They’ve been together since 2015 and draw equally from the jazz world of Ornette Coleman and the darker, knottier sounds of post-punk and Captain Beefheart. There’s a great intensity and drive in these songs – woozy, rambunctious and lurching, like Birthday Party falling down the stairs at a jazz joint. ‘Hookers (With … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Pardans – Hookers (with Hidden Depths) & Over The Moon And Beyond
