NEW MUSIC: Tropical Fuck Storm – Chameleon Paint

Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin (The Drones), Lauren Hammel (High Tension) on drums and Erica Dunn (Harmony, Palm Springs) have unveiled the sound of their new band Tropical Fuck Storm. It’s a jerky, catchy post-punk song that swaggers and slithers along, sounding like it could collapse at any moment. It’s a glorious collision of chaos and euphoric rock.

The debut TFS 7″ single, “Chameleon Paint” b/w “Mansion Family”, will be released on September 22 as a label collab between TFS Records and Mistletone Records. This limited edition 7” is the first of a series; each 7” featuring an original Liddiard A-side and a B-side cover of “songs we love and wish we had written”. The “Mansion Family” B-side is lifted from Melbourne band The Nation Blue, who released the original less than a year ago. Each 7” will feature phantasmagoric cover art by Montréal artist Joe Becker.

NEW MUSIC: Show Me Where It Hurts

Auckland, NZ duo Show Me Where It Hurts are next week officially releasing their debut single ‘Show Me Where It Hurts’ at Lucha Lounge on Friday April 4th with support from Betty Loves Elvis. After a couple of years of demos, studio recordings (at Neil Finn’s Roundhead Studios) and live shows (including a support slot for Bobby Womack) Josh Hetherington (Fender Rhodes, vocals) and Ronny Growler (drums) are releasing their single on 7″ vinyl which will be available at the show and at local record stores, with a digital release via Bandcamp. Here’s the new clip for the song and it’s rhythmic soul that perfectly intersects the sound of the band Spain and the jazzier strains of Jimmy Smith.

TRACK OF THE WEEK: The City Lights | (She’s Got) My Name and My Number

The City Lights have followed up their excellent 2012 LP I Just Got To Believe with a brand new single, a AA side 7″ in fact. They’ve hooked up with The Exile Co. to release the 300 copy pressing which includes The City Lights’ (She’s Got) My Name and My Number and The Exile Co.’s Fay Ray.

(She’s Got) My Name and My Number is our Track of the Week and it’s a refreshing power pop dispatch that harnesses the trio’s irrepressible energy. The City Lights know how to write economical and hook-heavy songs and this one arrives unassumingly before bursting into life on the back of Graeme Trewin’s trigger-happy drums and the Roden bros guitars that’ll make you want to drop your craft beer and start playing air guitar on the dancefloor of your local pub.

NEW MUSIC: Beastwars release first taste of their new LP

New Zealand masters of the heavy Beastwars have gone from strength to strength on the back of their live shows and their great debut LP. Ahead of the release of the second album they’ve pressed up two of the tracks on ‘glow in the dark’ 7″ vinyl. You can check out The Sleeper (B-side) below, a dark ominous lumbering monster of a track and the band will unleash the even heavier A-side Tower of Skulls in the coming weeks.

NEW MUSIC: I Dream In Transit | Absolute Peace 7″

Melbourne duo I Dream In Transit have recently released the wonderful new single Absolute Peace backed with the equally great Night Dog. They’ve pressed it as a 7″ too so for those of you who covet the black circle you can grab a limited edition pressing if you are quick. Head over to their Bandcamp page to order now and/or stream and buy a digital copy.

Absolute Peace is a slow-paced wander through a world inhabited by ghostly keyboards and haunting vocals. The song is reminiscent of Nico filtered through a dubbed out effects unit. There is tension present but not of the kind that needs to be released as the song creaks and shimmers in some kind of sonic suspended animation. Night Dog is intimate and immersive, pulling you into its scratchy soundscape. Recorded a few years ago it brings to mind an even sparser and more organic take on The xx with a dark noir patina coating everything – from the reverb dripping drums to delicately placed delayed guitar and vocals that sound like ghostly radio despatches from another time.

LISTEN: New single from Total Control on Sub Pop

Melbourne’s Total Control are releasing their first 7″ single on Sub Pop next week and both Scene From A Marriage and the b-side Contract are exclusive to the release. The release comes on the back of their Henge Beat LP from 2011 that garnered great reviews. After a deceptive acoustic guitar intro the song kicks into gear with the band’s choppy swagger making providing a glorious lurching momentum through the track.
