NEW MUSIC: Tindersticks Soundtrack ‘High Life’

Tindersticks and Stuart A. Staples are custom built for soundtrack work, such is their ability to conjure such exquisite and restrained mood and atmosphere, both musically and vocally. They’ve worked on a number of film projects in the past and this latest one by Staples is for the movie High Life, directed by Claire Denis – who Staples has worked with on seven of her … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Tindersticks Soundtrack ‘High Life’

NEW MUSIC: Karyme – خونمون

This pulsing, kinetic instrumental track from Australian producer Karyme caught our ear this week. Elements of jazz, trip hop and downbeat electronica combine on a track that sounds like it’s in constant motion. A playful bass-line keeps things anchored as drums push and pull and synth pads provide melodic beds of texture and sonic bliss. خونمون [kho͞onamo͞on] the first single from Karyme’s full length release, Full … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Karyme – خونمون

NEW MUSIC: FortEver – Hwy 62

Shoegaze guitars that recall Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish, dubbed out hypnotic drums, psych-folk acoustic guitar, MBV trippy effects. There’s a whole bunch of stuff going on in this instrumental track from a Californian act that we know very little about other than it is the project of Scott Fairbrother who has had music placed in a few TV shows and games such as Grand Theft Auto. … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: FortEver – Hwy 62

NEW MUSIC: OVER – Mostly Plants

OVER are two guys (Brett Paulin, Dan Workman) from Toronto, Canada who peg their sound as psychedelic digital shoegaze and it’s a pretty spot on description when you listen to this track ‘Mostly Plants’. It swirls, billows and decays across the sonic spectrum. There are vocals but they’re nestled just below the surface, partially submerged and it’s often hard to make out the lyrics. It matters … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: OVER – Mostly Plants

NEW MUSIC: Earth – Cats On The Briar

It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since Earth released their last LP, Primitive And Deadly. The great news this morning is that a brand new album, Full Upon Her Burning Lips is set for release on May 24th. Earth are Dylan Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion, Here’s the first taste of the album with the track … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Earth – Cats On The Briar

NEW MUSIC: Kip LaVie – Function Is Form

Taken from the brand new album This Creator, here’s a really nice track from Kip LaVie, a Portland-based producer. ‘Function Is Form’ has an aqueous feel, burbling and constantly in motion as organic and synthetic sounds intertwine and rise and fall in the mix. The arrangement and production is a standout on this track and stylistically he clearly draws on jazz, avant garde electronic composition … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Kip LaVie – Function Is Form

NEW MUSIC: Joey Walker – On Top

This song caught my attention early with a vocal sound and feel that reminded me of Wild Beasts. Stick with it and it’ll take you on a journey. It builds into a turbulent cacophony like Josh T Pearson’s Lift To Experience before the clouds part momentarily and a more darkly euphoric swell spirals upward for the last two minutes. It’s epic and immersive, emotive post-rock … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Joey Walker – On Top

NEW MUSIC: Surmland Sound Science – Analysis: Unidentified KHz

We’re hitting up some sounds from Sweden today, in the form of this track from Surmland Sound Science. It comes from their EP The First Thesis. There’s not much to be found online about the group or individual – no Facebook or Spotify presence. I guess they let the music do the talking and we’ll take that. ‘Analysis: Identified KHz’ is an instrumental piece that … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Surmland Sound Science – Analysis: Unidentified KHz

NEW MUSIC: SHON – A Crack In It

SHON is a Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist who released an EP called Made As It Drifted, earlier in 2018. ‘A Crack In It’ is one of those textured and layered tracks that recalls the inventiveness of Radiohead and the willingness to place real instruments in digital environments. SHON uses an art-rock and post-rock  palette of sound and it works wonderfully on both sonic and songwriting levels. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: SHON – A Crack In It

NEW MUSIC: Umifozi – Asterkross

Umfozi (Elias Araya) hails from Sweden and is the former drummer for indie band Junip. His solo project sees him channelling self-confessed influences such as Alice Coltrane, Neurosis and Sylvester and creating these hypnotic instrumental pieces that are built on percussive elements yet they possess floating, drifting avant-jazz and electronic qualities that take the pieces to quite interesting and subtle places. You can listen to … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Umifozi – Asterkross

NEW MUSIC: Lennard Rubra – L’archetipo di Artemide

Here’s a great track from Lennard Rubra, a 21 year old multi-instrumentalist from Riccione, Italy. ‘L’archetipo di Artemide’ recalls the sparkling knotty and intertwined guitars of Television and the avant-indie post-rock of the 2000s such as Dirty Projectors and Ponytail. ‘L’archetipo di Artemide’ is the opening track on his recently released debut album Paracusie Notturne. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Lennard Rubra – L’archetipo di Artemide
