NEW MUSIC: Pip Blom – Come Home

Today we’ve got some great new music from the Netherlands, in the form of the track ‘Come Home’ by Pip Blom. Indie rock styles aplenty, built on a wonderfully insistent and pulsing rhythm section, guitars that snake about and create all kinds of interesting sonic shapes. Vocally the voices overlap and intertwine giving ‘Come Home’ a distinctly hypnotic feel. Pip’s Paycheck EP was released 5th October digitally … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Pip Blom – Come Home

ALBUM REVIEW: The Goon Sax – We’re Not Talking

They were young when they formed, young when they recorded their first album and they’re still only just sloping out of their teens as they release their sophomore album. At its strongest, We’re Not Talking still reaches the same impossibly catchy jangle-pop heights that they impressed with on their debut, but across its 30 minutes some minor risk-taking doesn’t quite pay off.  Their trademark innocence … Continue reading ALBUM REVIEW: The Goon Sax – We’re Not Talking

NEW MUSIC: Heartthrob Chassis – Sister

Here’s some blank-eyed, gutter-glam noise-rock from Heartthrob Chassis out of Detroit. The band is headed by Margaret Doll Rod, former songwriter and member of the stage-smashing Demolition Doll Rods. The track lurches and staggers along with an almost Suicide-like drone quality. Babes in Toyland and early Hole are reference points too, with some added Sonic Youth squalls, dirge and dissonant causticity. The track comes from Heartthrob Chassis’ … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Heartthrob Chassis – Sister

ALBUM REVIEW: Suede – The Blue Hour

Suede are this deep into their career and have flirted equally with the charts and the arthouse that they have earned the right to be the masters of their own destiny. Hence they’ve realised that the best Suede albums have a mix of grandiose, sweeping music and dissertations on the minutiae and unease of modern life. The Blue Hour is the third album in a … Continue reading ALBUM REVIEW: Suede – The Blue Hour

NEW MUSIC: Diana Radar – Growing

A new track and clip from Melbourne quartet Diana Radar. ‘Growing’ is their third single this year, taken from an upcoming LP or EP from recording sessions engineered by Lachlan Wooden (Primary Colours, Archie Roach), and mastered by Mikey Young (Total Control, Eddy Current Suppression Ring). ‘Growing’ is a tumbling cache of sparkling and jangling guitars and melodically rolling bass. It has that New Order, Smiths … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Diana Radar – Growing

NEW MUSIC: Dom Tivadar – Bottle Go Bang

In my travels on ye internets I came across this intriguing track by Dom Tivadar from the UK. It’s got a warbly lo-fi wooze and shimmer about it. Primitive yet damn catchy and filled with little twists and intricate details that add up to a great slice of psychedelia. Part Chris Knox, part Jay Reatard. Dom has a 10″ lathe cut called Sings & Plays … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Dom Tivadar – Bottle Go Bang

NEW MUSIC: Interpol – If You Really Love Nothing

So far this is our favourite track from the new Interpol album. The record shows flashes of their early brilliance and though it doesn’t hold up across all tracks it’s well worth spending some time with these songs. ‘If You Really Nothing’ is Banks doing falsetto over trademark Interpol slashing guitars and tumbling drums. Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Interpol – If You Really Love Nothing

NEW MUSIC: Asbest – They Kill

Here’s some coruscating post-punk with angular sheets of guitar, drums that push and pull under the anguished howl of singer Robyn Trachsel from the band Asbest. They’re a trio out of Switzerland, probably the first Swiss band we’ve featured here at DS. Their sound caught our ear as it reminded us of the kind of existential heavy yet intelligent punk rock of Die! Die! Die!, … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Asbest – They Kill

NEW MUSIC: Darren Cross – Sur La Vague (Drive Me Nuts)

The sonic alchemist that is Darren Cross (Jep and Dep, Gerling) has released the second single from his new LP Peacer. ‘Sur La Vague (Drive Me Nuts)’ is a persistent ear-worm of a track. Over a Krautrock rhythm he weaves a mantra-like vocal peppered with hovercraft synths and saxophone. It’s that sweet blend of downbeat and uptempo – a kaleidoscopic, left-of-centre, pop nugget that brings … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Darren Cross – Sur La Vague (Drive Me Nuts)

NEW MUSIC: Bad Sav – Hens Teeth

The wonderfully named Bad Sav are releasing their debut album on September 21st via Fishrider Records in New Zealand. The trio is comprised of Death And The Maiden guitarist/vocalist Hope Robertson and bassist/vocalist Lucinda King, plus Shifting Sands guitarist Mike McLeod (on drums here). We’re digging the blend of chugging rhythms, dreamy vocal delivery and guitars that jangle in a distant fuzzed out way – like Dinosaur … Continue reading NEW MUSIC: Bad Sav – Hens Teeth

INTERVIEW: Harmony

THE HAZARDOUS TERRAIN OF LOVE It’s been four years between albums for Melbourne’s Harmony, with members focusing on other projects and babies entering the frame. As Tom Lyngcoln explains to Chris Familton, this time around there were changes in both the recorded sound of Double Negative and the way he approached the writing of its songs. “Alex [Lyngcoln, drummer] and I had a baby daughter … Continue reading INTERVIEW: Harmony
