NEW MUSIC: JW Francis – Maybe

JW Francis hits a super-melodic collision of indie pop and woozy, rich and warm hazy psych funk on this new track. You can hear the influence of acts such as Beck and Phoenix alongside contemporaries Mac DeMarco, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and even the more commercial indie pop strains of Boy Pablo. ‘Maybe’ is fun but it’s not frivolous, with sonic details in the rhythm section providing particular rewards.

NEW MUSIC: JW Francis – New York

We came across JW Francis for the first time last year and we were impressed by the irrepressible psych pop rush and tumbling melodies he concocted. He’s hit the nail on the head again with the recently released single ‘New York‘.

He locks down the insistent rhythm and drapes it in tumbling, slightly askew, dreamy guitar lines. Wonderful stuff.

“I’m a licensed tour guide of NYC. This place has taught me so much. I wanted to write an homage, but also express how I feel, which is mostly contained in the first line of the song ‘I’ll sleep when dead.’”

NEW MUSIC: JW Francis – Lofi

When he hits the central tangled and tumbling guitar riff, JW Francis sounds like the lovechild of The Strokes, Real Estate and Talking Heads on this smart earworm of an art rock single. ‘Lofi’ is the second of three singles he’s released in 2019. Check out the others too – ‘Is That The One’ in particular is excellent.

Francis was born in Tulsa Oklahoma, raised in Paris, France, and now based in New York City.
