VIDEO PREMIERE: Sunny Flynn Hugo – Walk Down

IMG_7093.JPG

Brisbane quartet Sunny Flynn Hugo have been busy recording their self-titled debut LP across SE Queensland over the last two years and the good news is that its release will be celebrated with a launch gig at Junk Bar on Sunday June 10th.

The latest single/video is ‘Walk Down’, a wistfully strummed and gently propulsive slice of windswept Americana/indie rock complete with a wonderfully lazy chorus of oohs before a sweet slip into half time like The Band on downers. The rest of the album is equally rewarding, with melancholic and artful pop shapes colliding across the 11 tracks and jangly chords and catchy guitar lines tracing their way through the songs.

Keep an eye on their Bandcamp page to hear/buy the album and if you head there you can also check out this earlier single ‘City II’.

NEW MUSIC: The Goon Sax – Up To Anything

Brisbane trio The Goon Sax are about to release their debut LP via Chapter Music in a couple of weeks. Here’s the title track Up To Anything, a song that hits the right spots for us – a bass line reminiscent of The Bats,  the delightfully doleful vocal style of Louis Forster and brisk, economical and snappy drums. It’s a melancholic pop song par excellence. The band are playing a run of East Coast shows in April.

Sat Apr 2 – SYDNEY – Newtown Social Club – tickets
Sat Apr 9 – MELBOURNE – The Tote Hotel – tickets
Sat Apr 30 – BRISBANE – Trainspotters – tickets on the door

NEW MUSIC: Loomer | Bolt

909231_10151326800897703_1794474948_n

Brisbane’s Loomer will shortly release their debut LP Ceiling which will be out on vinyl at the end of May via Lost Race Records. It is a limited release of 100 copies so if you favour records over digital and you like what you hear below then get in quick. The track Bolt staggers and swoons with fair dollops of noise, drone and shoegaze textures. It is a dark and noisy, grinding beast of a song and if the rest of the record is as good as this then it’ll be worth checking out.

The Ceiling LP  is available digitally and to stream and pre-order the vinyl over at the label’s Bandcamp page.

VIDEO: The Clean | Anything Could Happen (live in Brisbane)

So The Clean are playing around Australia at the moment and I got along to their Sydney show. It was only the 2nd time I’ve seen them play – the 1st was at the Strawberry Fields Festival in the mid 90’s just out of Hamilton, just as the sun was setting behind the stage as a pink glow and it looked and sounded fucking great. Anyway, their show at The Factory Theatre was brilliant, living up to and exceeding all expectations. A review will be in next week’s Drum Media and posted up here the following week but in the meantime here is a vid of one of my favourite Clean tracks – Anything Could Happen – from their Brisbane show.
