Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and composer Julia Holter releases her new single “Sun Girl” today. Fragments of flute, field recordings, Yamaha CS-60, bagpipes, mellotron, drums, and fretless bass are interwoven to delirious and balmy effect, infusing the ludic drum programing and production style of Holter’s earliest recordings with a fresh vibrancy. The song’s lyrics – “Place me, drag me, move me, Sun Girl”—evoke the spirit of a childlike game, but also, says Holter, “being brought out of my comfort zone—into the unknown, playfulness and chaos.”
There’s a light, cosmic and technicolour playfulness to the video clip (by the artist and animator Tammy Nguyễn), marrying the floating, ethereal and organic/synthesised sound of the song. Vocally there’s a repetitive approach employed, contrasting with the perpetual musical motion of the surrounding instruments and sonic palette. It has a Spring/Summer feel to it too – a bonus for those of us heading into the warmer months in this part of the world.
