25th March…Purple Sneakers Presents… Last Night… Cuthbert… Metals & Owl Eyes… sounding pretty good huh? We sat down (virtually) with the ex Nightwalker and subjected him to our Before Last Night interrogation. He comes across as a pretty fascinating and engaging guy and someone who can rock a good full-body beard – here’s what he had to say…
Do any of you have any pre-gig rituals?
Worry. Reassure myself that my voice is OK. If it’s not I’ll have a few scotches to forget that it isn’t.
What do you personally bring to the sound of your band?
I bring the guitar and voice and songs and lyrics. I sometimes bring a beard and sometimes a sneaky view of mountains of chest hair. Sometimes I’ll bring the wrong notes but luckily there are a lot of nice people around to cover them up.
In 12 months time, what do you hope to have achieved musically?
I hope to have one album out and another almost out. I want to write a musical to be performed in my living room. I want to get better at guitar and singing like everyone else. I want to get better at songwriting and I want a lot more people to listen to my songs. And I want to make a living out of busking in Central Station tunnel.
If you could curate Last Night, who would be your dream line-up?
OK. I’m not sure what sort of angle we are going for. It might not be the danciest or most upbeat. But if I could and if I could go for free then I would have Sufjan headline but playing his banjo set if you know what I mean; Neil Young playing most of Harvest and On The Beach; John Lennon alone on stage with an acoustic guitar; Wavves were pretty special the other night so they can play to give the whole night more cahoonas; I haven’t chosen any Australian bands yet so the Drones would definitely play; the Atom Bombs would play on the dance floor with everyone dancing around and amongst them; and then Paul Kelly can end the whole night with “From Little Things Big Things Grow” suspended from the balcony or walking above the crowd on a specially installed runway. I don’t know if we have any time for DJs after that.
The last song you wrote, what is it about?
Oh, it’s about New York and it being hard. It’s pretty personal and I daren’t go into it now. It is always hard describing songs. I try not to anymore because I always end up making them sound boring or stupid. I guess the song describes the song. …maybe you should come on Friday and listen to it!
Recording/Touring – if you had to choose one which would it be?
At the moment recording! Every spare minute right now is spent thinking about it. That’s what it is like when you are trying to finish an album. You get very impatient and selfish.
Which Australian artist/band is setting the standard at the moment?
The Atom Bombs! What standard though? Um… I like Parades a lot and the Jezabels are very special. They are two pretty incredible bands setting some mighty fine creative standards. There are many many bands to choose from – Last Night generally has them all!
