apeschoolThere seems to be a return to skewed and interesting pop music of late. Influenced by Americana, Indie and Psych stylings they all seem to embrace experimentation, electronic sounds and non-lineal song structures. Leading the pack is of course Grizzly Bear, but in the second tier Ape School have released a strong self-titled album of adventurous and entertaining prog pop.

The instrumentation is all over the place – synthetic, organic, squelching and strumming  – everything is utilised to further the sonic palette of the songs. Influences raise their heads and then disappear before you’ve had time to fully adjust your ears. Backward vocals, circus organ, strings and flutes are just a small selection of the sounds on Ape School, ensuring that new discoveries are made with each listen. Just as you get familiar with a vocal melody like the catchy ‘My Intention’ you shift your attention to the music and it is like opening the door at the back of the wardrobe to Narnia.
