TheSoftPack

The Soft Pack are a new quartet out of San Diego that are attracting some hype in the blogosphere at the moment. Alongside Girls and Drums they are seem to be the next wave of bands to emerge from the noise pop mini scene of the last 2 years. That scene spawned No Age, Vivian Girls, Wavves, Times New Viking and Blank Dogs and was built on a lo-fi, DIY aesthetic that appealed to many people who were sick of the ‘indie rock’ mindset that was becoming bland.

What The Soft Pack and others bring to the party is a cleaner sound, organic recording vibe and a strong allegiance to The Strokes and the poppier side of post-punk. The raw aggression is limited and yet there is still a garage thing going on. The Soft Pack (formerly The Muslims) release their debut album Extinction on Nov 7th and from the preview tracks we’ve heard they are going to be big. They take the unhinged rock n roll of Black Lips, add in that dose of The Strokes and key into the bottomless well of The Velvet Underground. Nuggets 2010 anyone..?

Standout tracks include the propulsive Future Rock and the big sing-a-long chorus of Nightlife. Check their VHS-styled video for the album title track Extinction below…
